Saffron WIP

Animal species in need of an official name... may just be called a saffron....

These guys appear as falcons in my book AOH, but in the rework, they'll look like this. 'Saffron' for some of their feathers, which are bright red.

Sketch Dump of the Unscanned

Old sketches from WAY back! Some may be repeats (I was trying to be thorough) but in any case, here we have concept drawings for:

- Cat the Border Collie
- Emperor's Blood
- The Copperbane Series (in general)
- The Prayer Fulfilled
- Velocity

Also, a few things are random. Like the bucking bull and the creepy ass monkeys. Monkeys scare me!

Gods I Missed You So Much...

I'd feel awkward too if a pair of creepers like Sukra and Alkane were prowling around me while some desperate guy was giving me a hug.

Sukra and Alkane have come a loooong, long way from my first initial thought during the first write of EB of Dude, let's give this emperor guy some bodyguards! Now they're not just bodyguards, they're creepy stalker-control-freak-bipolar-psychopaths.

Yet somehow I love them....

First art from scratch on this new computer with tablet! Concept art from my manuscript, 3rd pass.

My Brother is Weird....

Who gave Ki a knife? Jeez, he's only like 10!

Practice comic, also, I wanted to do this because there is a disturbing lack of humans in my galleries (YES I CAN DRAW THEM!) and I've only really gotten good at kids in the last year... plus, I'm going f***ing insane from not having a computer. Mine committed suicide by leaping off the end of my bed and now I can't write my manuscript (which is murderrrr), so thus, comic inspired by it. Hopefully I'll do more. This really feels like good practice to me. :)

(Plus I have a really funny image of Ki and Hunter as babies which demands to be drawn and could go on a second page!)

Enviro Concept for TPF - Escavian Farm

Most of TPF takes place in the capital city of Serenity, but since much of Escavia is for me the countryside, I figured that that was a pretty good place to start for conceptualizing the civilized (human) world of Rimer. (I'm also very inspired by classical farm life.) I think from here I can work up to ideas for the city, as well as for other places on the world map. Rimer's an interesting place because I can't base its buildings off of just one place or point in history. I can't just rip ideas from Amsterdam like we did in uni. Rimer's different, because it's in the future, yet it's not high tech, so I must take ideas from our modern day for the architecture. I can't do weird sci-fi stuff like in Star Wars. For me, Rimer's buildings are a combination of now, the 1800 to early 1900s and London. Expect it to look old, grungy and yet flavoured with the present. That's what I'm trying to convey in all of the human stuff. I hope it works.

Drawn on a Cintiq at Capilano University.

Kayoss - Pt 1

More gratuitous sock theft. This time with stripes! Yes, there's a pt 2. I haven't started it yet. I'm going home now to do some last minute character design.

Anyway, enjoy!

Also, here's a very old WIP of that Jeka and Djinn scene. It's been improved greatly since this.

...and here's an animation I did called 'Fetch!' Cat the border collie is above fetching balls. He fetches sheep.

Emperor's Blood - Concept Art

People probably wonder why I draw concept art for my books, but the reason is, is that it helps me visualize them. It puts my thoughts on paper, so that instead of me going back to read boring notes, I can simply look upon my concept art, which can be of anything from future scenes, to the characters themselves and sometimes even their environments. My library of concept art for EB will likely never be equalled, as the book as been in production nearly as long as AOH has been in editing (about four years) but its libary is important to me. Through it I have a window into how I used to draw and I look upon scenes which no longer exist within the canon story. I can look at these and dream of new ones inspired by them, taking from what was old. I never completely scrap an idea. The cast of Emperor's Blood, while a bunch of guys with some pretty bad problems, are very dear to me and have taught me more about art than any of my other characters. These guys taught me to draw humans (even though they themselves are not.) They taught me everything as I have struggled through the years to draw a good face, or a good body in general. I'm only now beginning to draw good human poses and as my anatomy improves, I'm looking forwards to finishing my goal of making model packs for the entire cast of EB.

Why is this such a delicious porject for me? Because nearly all the guys in EB are the same species and racially, look much the same. I get to work with their anatomical guidelines, finding ways to make them individuals while still sticking to my rules. For instance, Ki's really scrawny and he's shorter than the rest of the cast by about a head. In EB, he's described as being about 4"5. He's got a bit of a Napolean complex. (Napolean was freaking awesome.) His hair is short and clean; he's like a well groomed horse, only drakoon. He's refined and a bit girly, just a little. In dragon form Ki's the same and his teeth do not overlap his bottom jaw. In contrast, Alkane is a literal tank of a guy. He's barrel chested, brawny and he's got mean little eyes like a stereotypical drill sergeant. He could whoop your ass and not break a sweat. He's also really hard to draw, because he's the exact opposite of catty little Ki. It's like putting a draft horse next to a pony. It's fun. Then there's Kelveniska, who looks like Ki because they're related, but who is taller, stronger - he's what Ki should look like, even though he doesn't. This project is teaching me more about character design than anything else ever has, especially since these characters aren't just characters to me. They're my buddies, my friends. I want to do them justice. That's what being a writer and also an artist means.

I hope you guys like today's dump of concept art. :)
